EROSION IS CAUSING CONTAMINATION OF THE
FRESHWATER LENS UNDERGROUND WITH SEAWATER.
( * ) Chemicals and human waste has been seeping into the
ground in recent decades and years. This is causing further contamination of this underground water supply.
The Islands are small and have a small surface area. the underground water supply built up from rain over the years
has in many cases been contaminated./ or depleted.
wells are now unusable in many residential Maldive islands.
The new Artificial freshwater lens is a closed system - like a closed/capped reservoir. It is a closed system away from the unpredictable dynamics of the Maldives such as shoreline erosion and seawater which can intrude deep into the island underground.
It is also a closed system from the chemicals and human waste.
( domestic liquids or industrial diesel fuels/ spillages etc.. which have seeped into this uderground water supply)
Rain falls onto the new sports court instead and is filtered through a sand and/or gravel court surface. This is not dissimilar to how many sports courts already deal with the issue of preventing water build up on court surfaces by allowing the water to drain away.
This water is instead collected in water tanks below the courts surface.
The water is then cleaned and distributed to the inhabitants/dwellings/villas.
